Follow your curiosity.
Right now I’m creating this website, but I don’t know why. Every day for the past few weeks I have sat on my bed with my computer, notebooks and fancy colourful pens and I just wait to see what happens. I’m creating it because I want to, but I don’t know exactly why I want to and what the outcome will be. Every time I go to work on it it begins to take a slightly new direction. Is it to process what I have been learning? Is it because I want to write and create? Is it in hopes of helping others? Maybe one of these reasons, or maybe all. I just know that it’s what I want to do next.
One of the best pieces of advice I have heard about finding your ‘purpose’ or something you are passionate about is to follow your curiosity. I was at first skeptical and underwhelmed at this advice I heard from Elizabeth Gilbert, but the more I sat and thought about it, the more it made sense. I always found whenever I stretched too much into the future and thought about what I wanted to do, I fell short. When I thought about what I ‘loved’ to do I felt confused. But when I thought about what I was curious about or what I wanted to do next I seemed to have the answer right away.
But, here’s the kicker that took me some time to learn….that next step often does not make sense. In fact, it usually does not make sense. For a long time I didn’t act on what I was curious about because it wasn’t logical or I couldn’t see the path it was taking me on. But when I started trusting it and following through with it, the reasons became clear as I went along.
You will never be able to predict how your ‘story’ will unfold. It only ever unfolds in small steps. So often we hear those whispers from our intuition to do something but don’t listen because it doesn’t seem rational or we don’t ‘need’ to. But the truth is, it doesn’t need to be rational, it definitely matters, and could be the most pivotal step in your journey.
So follow your curiosity and see where it takes you one step at a time. In the meantime I will continue working on my website and keep you posted on where it takes me.
